Information Management Assessment with Cardinia Shire Council
Thank you to Ruth Edge from Cardinia Shire Council for allowing us to present the results of a recent Information Management Assessment to the Victorian Local Government Information Governance group.
As more organisations and businesses make the transition towards a digital model of service, the responsibility for critical information management is more important than ever before.
David Jackson, Chief Information Office of the Cardinia Shire Council, spoke to the growing complexity of effective data management in the modern technological landscape.
“Data locations and uses have diversified. At the same time comprehension of value and risk has increased. Threat actors continue to get smarter and become more capable.”
Jackson said that legislative penalties have become stronger in response to the growing threats to cyber security.
Regulated entities like Local Government have a seemingly endless list of regulations and standards that they need to meet. The regulatory landscape is complex and ever-changing – it’s a challenge to keep abreast of all the requirements and know where your key risks lie.
The Council ICT and Information management team have made significant progress over the recent years and as we know are well respected by their peers. This project increases awareness of Council’s regulatory obligations for information management and covered program and business systems level assessments from across the following regulatory domains:
Privacy – Victorian Information Privacy Principles
Recordkeeping – PROV Standards
Information security – VPDSF
Cyber security – NIST CyberSecurity Framework
It’s great that based on the evidence and work delivered by the team, the Council Executive have fully endorsed and funded the plan and undertaken measures to improve performance to meet regulator obligations.
The Regulatory Compliance Assessment Toolkit (RCAT) ensures a holistic approach to closing business risk gaps, through a cloud based software solution. Utilising RCAT and additional training from Votar Partners, the Council ICT and Information Management team have made significant progress towards achieving the council’s regulatory requirements for information management.
Ruth Edge, Information Management Team Leader at Cardinia Shire Council, said that the council was “really happy” with the implementation of RCAT.
“It is a very smart way of giving you comprehensive insight into the information and data your organisation holds and how it is being managed”, she said.
“We are able to more effectively plan for our future and meet compliance requirements expected to be applied to valuable information assets we manage for our public.”
It’s been a pleasure for us at Votar to work with the Cardinia Shire team and support them on their Information Management maturity journey.
